Render Hangs at "Gathering Light"

I am using IDX Renditioner 1.2.b2 on Mac OS X. 
My computer statistics are: 3 GHz Intel Dual Core; 4 GB Memory, 6GB Cache. 
My model stats are: 13,270 KB, 141 Materials, 256,341 Edges, and 132,738 Faces.

Issue: I can get a preview render to finish, but any rendering above preview stops at Gathering Light.  I let the program render overnight, thinking it just needed more time.  Ten hours later and it was still in the render indicator bar was still in the same position and displaying "Gathering Light".  Is the model just too large?  Do I need to simplify? 

On a different subject I am also having difficulty getting daylight through windows.

Any issue where the render 'hangs' tends to be a memory problem, high res textures/large model etc and there is not much you can do.  I have already mentioned breaking up models into smaller units recently and hoped folk would get a search to reveal this, ho hum.  As far as getting light through glass goes, are you using the 'glass' surface with the 'front' facing the outside of the model?  Using the grey/blue face in this position can prevent light showing through.
